Honest guide, no drama. He told us on WhatsApp beforehand that the crater might be closed because of the gas, and it was, so we did the rim and the sunrise instead. Still a very good morning; the colour of the lake is unreal. My partner struggled on the steep part and Sarosa carried her bag and kept everyone cheerful at 3am. He arranged a trolley for her way down in about two minutes.
We did Bromo and Ijen with Sarosa over two days in June. He picked us up in Malang at 00:30 as promised, drove us to a viewpoint where there were maybe fifteen people instead of the crowd we later saw on the main platform, and knew exactly where to stand for the light. At Ijen the fire was small that night, and he had told us beforehand that this might happen, which we appreciated more than a sales pitch. Very organised, easy to talk to, and the hotel in Banyuwangi was clean.
We only had one free day from Malang and chose Tumpak Sewu. Left at five, at the viewpoint by seven with almost nobody there. The way down is steep and slippery and I was nervous on the ladders, but Sarosa and the local guide from the base were patient and told me where to put my feet. Standing under that wall of water was worth every step. Back in Malang for a late lunch.
We went with our kids (7 and 10). Sarosa had blankets in the car and let them sleep until the viewpoint, then found a spot at the front where they could actually see. The 250 steps to the crater were fine for both of them, and he kept them well back from the edge. Breakfast in the village afterwards was simple and good. He also gave us honest advice against a second early morning with young children, which we followed.
Three days, three very early mornings, and honestly the best part of our month in Indonesia. Tumpak Sewu was the surprise: the climb down is proper work (bamboo ladders, a river, everything wet) but the base of the falls is worth it. Sarosa managed the whole thing quietly, sorted the ferry to Bali at the end and even messaged us the next day to check we had arrived. Would book again without thinking about it.
We added Baluran after Ijen and it was the right call. Sarosa picked us up at 15:00, an hour later we were on the Bekol savanna with deer everywhere and peacocks calling, then Bama beach with monkeys at sunset. It is not Africa, but for Java it feels properly wild. He knew when the animals come to the water and where to stand on the watchtower.

About East Java
East Java is the eastern third of Indonesia’s most populous island. Surabaya has the big airport, Malang is the cool highland base for Bromo and Tumpak Sewu, and Banyuwangi at the far end is the base for Ijen — with Bali a 45-minute ferry away. It all sits along one road, which is why a trip here flows naturally from west to east.

Honest answers about blue fire, cold mornings, kids, luggage and how booking works.
The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest sunrises and the best chance of blue fire, and June to September adds the Milky Way if you come near new moon. July and August are the coldest and busiest months, with Indonesian school holidays and higher weekend park fees. The rainy season from November to March is still possible; I just build a spare morning into the plan in case the viewpoint sits in cloud. If you can, come on a weekday.
Not really. Bromo sunrise is at about 05:20 and Ijen's blue fire is best seen between 02:00 and 04:30, and the two are around six hours' drive apart, so they have to happen on consecutive nights.
The shortest sensible version is my Bromo + Ijen 2D1N: sunrise at Bromo, drive east in the afternoon, sleep in Banyuwangi, hike Ijen the following night and be on the ferry to Bali by mid-morning. Some agencies sell it without the hotel night; I do not, because you would be walking up Ijen on no sleep.
No, and be careful with anyone who tells you it is. The blue fire is burning sulphuric gas, a natural phenomenon that varies from night to night and is only visible in the dark, roughly 02:00 to 04:30. On most dry-season nights you see it, but the wind can push smoke over the viewing spot, the rangers close the crater descent when the gas is bad, and Ijen itself occasionally closes. I always say the hike, the sunrise and the turquoise lake are the tour; the blue fire is the bonus.
Bromo is easy: the jeep does the climbing and the only effort is 250 steps to the crater rim, which you can skip. Ijen is moderate: 3 km uphill from Paltuding to the rim, 1.5 to 2 hours with the first 2 km steep, then an optional 45-minute descent into the crater that is steep, rocky and dark. If you cannot walk up, local men push trolley carts for about IDR 800,000 to 1,200,000 return.
The Tumpak Sewu descent is 30 to 45 minutes of bamboo ladders, ropes and a river crossing, slippery in every season, so I rate it moderate to challenging; the viewpoint above it is a flat ten-minute walk that suits everyone.
